Short Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
Harish purchased 50 dozen bananas for ₹ 135. Five dozen bananas could not be sold because they were rotten. At what price per dozen should Harish sell the remaining bananas so that he makes a profit of 20%?
Answer:
Cost price of 50 dozen bananas = ₹ 135
Bananas left after removing rotten bananas = 50 - 5 = 45 dozen
Now effective CP of 45 dozen bananas = ₹ 135
Cost of one dozen bananas = \(\frac{135}{45}\) = ₹ 3

Now to make 20% profit selling price should be
SP = CP + CP × \(\frac{20}{100}\)
SP = 135 + 135 × \(\frac{20}{100}\)
SP = 135 + 27 = 162
∴ SP of each dozen banana = \(\frac{162}{45}\) = ₹ 3.60

Question 2.
Nalini borrowed ₹ 550 from her friend at 8% per annum. She returned the amount after six months. How much did she pay?
Answer:
Principal amount (P) = ₹ 550
Time period (T) = 6 months = \(\frac{6}{12}=\frac{1}{2}\) year
(1 year = 12 months)
Rate of interest (R) = 8% p.a.
Interest = \(\left(\frac{P \times R \times T}{100}\right)\)
= \(\left(\frac{550 \times 8 \times \frac{1}{2}}{100}\right)\) = ₹ 22
Total amount paid after 6 months
= Principal amount + Interest = ₹ 550 + ₹ 22 = ₹ 572.
