Very Short Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
Solve the equation: 4x + 5 = 65
Answer:
4x + 5 = 65
4x = 65 - 5
x = \(\frac{60}{4}\) = 15

Question 2.
Sum of 14 and three times x is 35. Write in the form of equation.
Answer:
3x + 14 = 35

Question 3.
Sum of 5 and one-third of a number is 8. Write in the form of equation.
Answer:
\(\frac{x}{3}\) + 5 = 8

Question 4.
Write the equation 3x + 7 = 1 in statement form.
Answer:
On adding 7 to three times a number, we obtain 1.

Short Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
A number is 12 more than the other. Find the numbers if their sum is 48.
Answer:
Let the other number be x.
Then, number is x + 12.
It is given that their sum is 48.
∴ x + x + 12 = 48
⇒ 2x + 12 = 48
⇒ 2x = 48 - 12
⇒ 2x = 36
⇒ x = \(\frac{36}{2}\)
⇒ x = 18.
∴ Number is x + 12 = 18 + 12 = 30

Question 2.
The sum of two consecutive even numbers is 38. Find the numbers.
Answer:
Let the two consecutive even numbers are x and x + 2.
It is given that their sum is 38.
x + x + 2 = 38
⇒ 2x + 2 = 38
⇒ 2x = 38 - 2
⇒ 2x = 36
⇒ x = \(\frac{36}{2}\) ⇒ x = 18.
∴ The consecutive even integers are 18 and 18 + 2, i.e. 20.

Question 3.
Among the two supplementary angles, the measure of the larger angle is 36° more than the measure of smaller. Find their measure.
Answer:
Let the smaller angle be x.
It is given that the larger is 36° more than the smaller angle, i.e. x + 36°.
But, the sum of supplementary angles is 180°.
∴ x + x + 36° = 180°
⇒ 2x + 36° = 180°
⇒ 2x = 180°- 36°
⇒ 2x = 144°
⇒ x = \(\frac{144^{\circ}}{2}\)
⇒ x = 72°
∴ The smaller angle is 72° and the larger angle = (x + 36)°
= (72° + 36°) = 108°.

Question 4.
The length of a rectangle is 10 m more than its breadth. If the perimeter of rectangle is 80 m. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
Answer:
Let the breadth of the rectangle is 'x' m. Then, length is (x + 10) m.
But, it is given that the perimeter of the rectangle is 80 m.
∴ 2(length + breath) = 80
⇒ 2(x + x + 10) = 80
⇒ 2(2x + 10) = 80
⇒ 4x + 20 = 80
⇒ 4x = 80 - 20
⇒ 4x = 60
⇒    x = \(\frac{60}{4}\)
⇒ x = 15 m
∴ Breadth of the rectangle = 15 m
Length of rectangle = x + 10 = 15 + 10 = 25 m
