Around 12,000 years ago, there were major changes in the climate of the world, with a shift to relatively warm conditions. In many areas, this led to the development of grasslands. Those who hunted these animals now followed them, learning about their food habits and their breeding seasons. In how many parts can the stone age be divided? Describe.
Answer:
The stone age is divided into three stages
(1) Palaeolithic period-The earliest period of human history is known as the Palaeolithic period. The Palaeolithic period extends from 2 million years ago to about 12.0 years ago. This period is divided into the 

  • ‘Lower’ 
  • ‘Middle’ and 
  • ‘Upper’ Palaeolithic age. This long span of time covers 99% of human history.

(2) Mesolithic period-The period when we find environmental changes, beginning about 12,000 years ago till about
10.0 years ago is called the Mesolithic (middle stone). Stone tools found during this period are generally tiny and are called microliths. Microliths were probably stuck onto handles of bone or wood to make tools such as saws and sickles.

(3) Neolithic period next stage, from about 10,000 years ago, is known as the Neolithic period. In the Neolithic period tools were being refined.

Describe the changes in human life in the Neolithic period.

In the Neolithic period, there were many changes in human life as

  1. People started moving toward sustainable life.
  2. In the Neolithic period tools were polished to give a fine cutting edge, and mortars and pestles used for grinding grain and other plant products. Some tools were also made of bone.
  3. Many kinds of earthen pots have also been found. These were sometimes decorated and were used for storing things and for cooking food. ,
  4. Grains like rice, wheat and lentils now become an important part of the diet.
  5. Besides, people began weaving cloth. For this plants like cotton, could now be grown.

What do you know about the place ‘Mehrgarh’? Describe.
Answer:

  1. Mehrgarh is on a fertile plain, near the Bolan Pass, which is one of the most important routes into Iran.
  2. People learnt to grow barley and wheat, and rear sheep and goats for the first time in this area.
  3. At this site, many animal bones were found. Bones of wild animals such as deer and pigs, and also bones of sheep and goats were found.
  4. Other finds at Mehrgarh include remains of square or rectangular houses. Each house had four or more compartments, some of which may have been used for storage.
  5. There are many such burial sites in Mehrgarh, in which some belongings have also been kept with the dead. In one instance, the dead person was buried with goats.
