RBSE Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 14 Notes Environmental Chemistry

→ Environmental Chemistry:
It is that branch of science which deals with the chemical phenomenon occuring in the environment i. e., study of origin, transport, reactions and effects of chemical species in the environment.

→ Environmental Pollution:
The addition of any undesirable material to air, water and soil by a natural source or due to human activity to such a level of concentration which adversely effects the quality of environment is called environmental pollution.

→ Pollutants: The undesirable materials thus added the environment are called pollutants.

→ Troposphere: It is the most important region of the atmosphere because it is the habitat of all living organisms including animals and plants.

→ Stratosphere: It is the region above the troposphere lying between 10km to 50. km above the sea level.

→ Troposphere Pollution: It is in the lowest portion of the atmosphere which extends to a height of about 10 km from sea level.

  • Gaseous Air Pollutants: The pollutants such as oxides of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide etc.
  • Particulate Pollutants: Small solid particles and liquid droplets suspended in the air are collectively called as particulates. Such as dust, mist, fumes, smoke, smog etc.
