Question 2.
Explain overlapping and crosscutting differences by an example.
Answer:
Overlapping and Cross-cutting Difference- Today, many types of variations are found in most countries. These variations can be on many grounds such as caste, religion, class, race, language, culture etc. Whether the country is big or small, it does not make any special difference on the variations. Social division occurs when some social variation rises above other various variations. Overlapping and cross-cutting differences can be understood by the following examples-

(1) The difference between the Blacks and Whites becomes a social division in the US because the Blacks tend to be poor, homeless and discriminated against.

(2) In India Dalits tend to be poor and landless. They often face discrimination and injustice. Situations of this kind produce social divisions, when the social difference becomes more important than the other and people start feeling that they belong to different communities.

(3) If social differences cross cut one another, it is difficult to pit one group of people against the other. By this groups that share a common interest on one issuc are likely to be in different sides on a different issue. The Northern Ireland and the Netherlands are predominantly Christian but divided between Catholics and Protestants. In Northern Ireland, class and religion overlap with each other. Catholic are more likely to be poor, and the Protestants community is rich.

Catholics may have suffered a history of discrimination. In the Netherlands, class and religion tend to cut across each other. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich. The reason is that Catholics and Protestants have had conflicts in Northern Ireland, while they do not do so in the Netherlands. In this way overlapping social differences create possibilities of deep social divisions and tensions. Cross-cutting social differences are easier to accommodate.
